Information for Patients: Commonly Used Diagnostic Tests: MRA

Medical Description

Why is it done?

The test is the most accurate noninvasive method for finding out if there are blockages to the arteries of the kidneys (renal arteries). It also shows if there is plaque from atherosclerosis (high cholesterol) in other arteries.

What will it show?

The test shows pictures of the blood flow in the arteries.

How is it done?

Magnetic resonance works by beaming a very high magnetic field through the body, which makes body tissues show up on x-rays. You have to lie in a metal tube which contains the magnet for the test to be done. You also have an injection of a substance called gadolinium into a vein to make the arteries show up better.

Are there any risks?

Some people find it uncomfortable to lie in the tube. If you have any metallic objects implanted in your body (such as a heart pacemaker) you should check with your doctor. There are no side effects from the gadolinium injection.
