Information for Patients: Commonly Used Diagnostic Tests: Sleep Test
Medical Description Why is it done? The test is done to see if you have sleep disordered breathing (sleep apnea), which may be a factor in your hypertension. What will it show? It will show what happens to your breathing patterns when you fall asleep. If you have sleep apnea, you may develop periods of snoring and interrupted breathing when your airway gets narrow during sleep, and blocks the flow of air. These interruptions may lead to arousal. How is it done? It measures several bodily activities which are recorded from electrodes attached to your skin. These include brain waves, which record when you are awake and asleep, eye movements, muscle tension, breathing patterns, oximetry (the amount of oxygen in your blood measured from a probe on one finger), breathing patterns, and ECG (electrocardiogram). Are there any risks? There may be a little skin irritation from where the electrodes were placed. Practical Details Where do I go to have the test?
