Information for Patients: Commonly Used Diagnostic Tests : Renal Ultrasound

 Medical Description

Why is it done?

The test is done to examine your kidneys, which may be damaged by hypertension, or if they are diseased, be a cause of hypertension.

What will it show?

It will show how big your kidneys are, whether there are cysts in the kidneys, blockage to the outflow of urine, whether there is abnormal flow in the arteries (examined with a technique called Duplex Doppler ultrasound).

How is it done?

A probe is placed on your abdomen which emits high frequency sound waves that are reflected by the tissues inside your abdomen and detected by the probe. By moving the probe around it is possible to see most of the major organs.
